It was decision time for many at the Exponential Australia National Conference last week and it was exciting to see that by the end of the Conference, many men and women had responded to the call to be multipliers, coming forward to seal their decisions with prayer.
Just prior to that many had recorded online their decisions to be church planters, to see their churches plant churches or to see their denomination or network take additional steps to focus on church planting. How good is that!

Whilst it’s really exciting seeing the number of churches planted each year nearly doubling over the last five years, the sad reality is that NCLS estimate that the number of people attending religious meetings in Australia either regularly or semi regularly has decreased over the last year.
NCLS estimate that in 2026 just 16% of Australians attend religious services. That’s back to where Church attendance was during Covid in 2020!
The truth is that Australia does need more churches planted; and we need more church planters.
Research presented at the Exponential Australia National Conference paints a picture that church plants are:
- seeing most of their growth coming from new Christians,
- more effective at reaching the unchurched and dechurched, and
- more effective at reaching young adults
If we are concerned to see the harvest in our nation reached, we need to do something about it.
Three important steps are:
- See the culture in our churches being one that embraces the thought of reaching the unchurched and sending workers into the harvest.
- Put in place the systems that will both see newcomers embraced and train up and send workers into the harvest
- Plant churches that will take workers into the harvest.
