Avenue Church: Jeremy's Story

Jeremy Choo and a team in Melbourne planted a non conventional church that has disciple making at it’s core and is reaching university students who are seeking community and purpose.

HERE’S THEIR STORY:

The Avenue Church began with a group of university students in Melbourne who had just finished high school and were dreaming big for Jesus right where they were. After leading a Friday night high school ministry, where we saw God move through young people who were simply available and willing, we sensed Him calling us into something new – a church plant.

At the time, we had no idea what that would look like. We were inexperienced and didn’t fully understand what it meant to plant a church. Like many, we assumed church was mostly about a weekend worship service. But in 2020, when Melbourne’s lockdowns made gatherings impossible, we found ourselves asking deeper questions. Through these unexpected circumstances, God was reshaping our vision, drawing us back to the heart of what the church is meant to be.

That season led us to pivot. Instead of building around a centralised service, we embraced a microchurch model—small, intentional communities that live out Jesus’ vision for discipleship in everyday life. Rather than seeing church as an event, we saw it as a family on mission together.

Today, Avenue is an expanding network of missional microchurches meeting in universities, high schools, workplaces, and homes. We grow by investing in one person at a time, unleashing God-given potential and equipping people to be disciples who make disciples.

Church, for us, isn’t a program or a place – it’s a movement of people living out the values of the Kingdom.

Our microchurches are the church. We don’t gather for weekly weekend services because we believe the essence of church isn’t found in a single gathering but in a way of life – following Jesus together, loving well, and making an impact wherever we are.

Our generation is longing for real community, where they can truly know others and be known, and for a purpose bigger than themselves.

Avenue exists to be a movement where young people find both: a family to belong to and a mission to give their lives to.

Looking Ahead

As we continue this work, my heart remains steadfast in the vision God has given us—to train, equip, and send out leaders who will make a lasting impact. The need for strong, Spirit-led churches has never been greater, and we are committed to playing our part in meeting that need.

Whether through writing, teaching, or church planting, my life’s mission is to see people encounter Jesus, grow in their faith, and step into their divine calling. And as long as God opens doors, we will continue to walk through them – one church, one leader, and one transformed life at a time.
